Every Sunday the area between Liverpool and Commercial Street in East London is occupied by the many stands of the Petticoat Lane Market.

I ve been there now a couple of times - but usually only because I take a shortcut to go to the Brick Lane Market. Although the two are no more than 5 minutes walk away from each other the differences couldn't be any bigger.

While I love the colour and the global feel of the Brick Lane Market I find the Petticoat has quite a depressing touch. It feels so grey and dark - and quite messy and without much love displaced. I never really feel comfortable strolling around there - because everything seems too overloaded  with tacky stuff and it is surrounded by ugly concrete buidlings.

The Petticoat aims at the not so wealthy people of London - which i guess there are thanks to our lovely capitalist society quite a few. In the whole market i couldnt see a single item costing more than a tenner. You can find dead cheap shoes, jackets, suits, shirts, dresses and suitcases on an average of £2-5. But the choice is almost limited to just that.

So for everyone on a tight budget it's maybe something to check out - but if you're looking to find flea market style old treasures and little hidden gems than you rather walk for another 5 minutes to the Brick Lane Market.
